PEI, day 3, windsurfed with Barbara & Ben, SSW, 10-15, big boards, little sails

I heard the wind howling all night and got up to a bay of whitecaps, but we had a lazy breakfast and the wind was light by the time we got out there. No worries. We had a great light air session. High tide made for a perfect water depth, knee to waist deep over the entire sandbar.

Ben was tacking, beachstarting, and even got a few jibes on his 2.7 with the Carve 123.

Picture- A sign of the wind! Some nearby trees grow away from the direction of the prevailing west wind.

PEI looks sublime...I've always been curious about the place since I was a kid. Nice photos!

A note on our kiting conversation...did you catch the video of the guy who couldn't depower in Tropical Storm Fay? Here's the video.

Yeah, I've seen a few kiting videos like that. One of the things I like about windsurfing is that it feels more dangerous than it is. Kiting doesn't have that advantage. In fact it may be the other way around. Kiting may be more dangerous than it feels. I haven't tried it yet so I don't know. I did try hang gliding and decided that was too dangerous.

I have been kiting for 5 years, it is safer now than it was when I started, but I think they will continue to improve on the safety - it is needed...!

But the Fay kiter was a real knucklehead. He didn't have health insurance, so he went on all of the kite forums appealing for financial assistance with his medical bills, which were well into the 6 digits. A few days later, the Miami Herald reported than his girlfriend refused to offer any comments on the accident because he had signed an exclusive agreement with Inside Edition. I saw him give an interview on Good Morning America where he professed that he would do it all over again if he had the chance - that kiting is so much fun, it is worth taking those kinds of risks. Furthermore, he explained that he was self taught and that he is now an instructor! It is people like like him that give windsport enthusiasts a bad rep.
